Julep Strain

Straining a cocktail with a perforated julep strainer, typically from a mixing glass.

The julep strainer is a shallow perforated cup, angled against the wall of a mixing glass to hold back ice. It is the correct tool for a stirred drink; the Hawthorne belongs on a shaker tin. The strainer's name is a survivor of the mint julep era when it doubled as a way to drink around a bushel of mint.
