Hawthorne strainer

A perforated flat strainer with a coiled spring, fitted to a shaker tin.

The Hawthorne is the shaker strainer; the julep is the mixing-glass strainer. The coiled spring is the working part — it catches ice and pulp while letting the drink through. A quality Hawthorne has a tight spring you can pull to fine-strain by hand.
