Fortified wine

Wine to which a distilled spirit has been added, raising the ABV and preserving it.

Vermouth, sherry, port, Madeira, and Marsala are all fortified wines. Fortification began as a preservation strategy for sea transport and evolved into a category of its own. They belong in the fridge after opening.
