Expressed peel

A citrus peel that has been twisted over the drink and dropped in or discarded.

Once the peel has been expressed, its remaining purpose is decorative. Old Fashioneds keep the peel in the glass; Martinis usually discard it after a wipe on the rim. Either is correct; the wrong move is skipping the expression entirely.
