Directional freezing

Freezing water from one direction only to produce crystal-clear ice.

Directional freezing works because impurities and dissolved gases concentrate in the last part to freeze. A small cooler in the freezer, lid off, freezes from the top down; the last inch (cloudy) is cut away.
