Cocktail Techniques

Dilution

The water added to a cocktail by melting ice during shaking or stirring.

A properly prepared cocktail is 20–25% dilution by volume. Under-diluted drinks taste hot; over-diluted ones taste flat. The main levers are ice quantity, ice quality, and time spent stirring or shaking.
